Split Nutrition is the brainchild of some seriously smart people. Created by award-winning chef and cycling enthusiast Jeff Mahin, elite performance and celebrity nutritionist Dr. Philip Goglia, and restaurateur Christopher Meers. While spending years in the kitchen under the mantra that taste trumps nutrition, Mahin’s health suffered as he juggled multiple restaurants and long hours. Through competitive cycling, he met Dr. Goglia, who changed his food philosophy: eat real foods, eat balanced foods. Combining Mahin’s love of fitness and this new philosophy, the three set out to create Split!
On a mission to make better foods on-the-go for their active lifestyles, they reinvented the way you eat America’s beloved PB&J and broke it down into the best whole foods that are nutritious and taste great. We chatting with Jeff about what his favorite healthy picks are at LA favorite, Erewhon Market!
My favorite thing to buy at Erewhon is, of course, Split! They carry all four flavors so there's a variety to choose from depending on my mood. I like to stock up since I'm always on-the-go. I keep Split packs in my backpack, car, office, and kitchen. Wherever I am, there's a Split pack close by.
I also love Mountain Valley Spring Water's unflavored sparkling water. I'm a sucker for sparkling water, but I especially love the flavor of Mountain Valley because it's neither too salty nor excessively mineral heavy. I could easily drink three or four of these a day.
Next up is Bubbies pickles, aka the best pickles in the world. Not only are they simply delicious, but after a grueling bike ride, noshing on a Bubbies pickle helps curb any cramping of the muscles.
For a totally different flavor profile, I always stock up on White Gold raw white honey. I love honey in general, but this one is truly special. If you store it in the fridge, the consistency becomes similar to frosting and sort of tastes like it, too! It’s a great guilt-free treat to have on hand.
Erewhon brand's Super Greens Soup is another staple in my kitchen. While this soup is great on its own, I also use it as the broth for risotto. The depth of the risotto's resulting flavor is unreal!
Last but not least, I also buy Erewhon brand vitamins. In the past, I would take a multivitamin and call it a day. But then I tried Erewhon brand muscle recovery and B12 and have enjoyed great results. I'm more energized and my muscles feel more ready for a ride or a yoga sculpt class than they did before I added the Erewhon supplements to my regimen.
