The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has officially announced their list of Nominees for its 2022 induction.
Bands or individual artists can only be eligible for the nomination when their first commercial recording was released at least 25 years prior. John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation explained, “Their music not only moved generations but also influenced the sound of countless artists that followed."
Seven out of the 17 Nominees for this year are nominated for the first time, giving this year's roundup a diverse group of impactful artists.
Marking his first nomination, Beck is celebrated for blurring the lines of rock and creating a new sound from a blend of the past and present. From being ranked among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time to winning numerous Grammy, he has proven his talent time and time again. Duran Duran is also celebrating their first well-earned nomination this year. Over the years, they scored 18 hit singles and over 100 million sold records. Not only have they innovated the genre, but they have inspired countless fellow artists.
For Eminem, not only is it the rapper's first nomination, but it is also the first year he could be on the ballot. Coming as no surprise because he is the best-selling artist of the 2000s, he has won 15 Grammys over the past 25 years and had the pleasure to be the first artist to have 10 No. 2 debut albums on Billboard 200. The success propelled him up the musical ranks and furthered hip hop a globally successful genre.
A longheld, beloved household name, Dolly Parton established her dynamite career by way of female empowerment, philanthropy, grace and outlandish style. She has broadened the country genre and inspired many that came after her.
Already a true legend, Lionel Richie is celebrating a new feat with his first nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He has graced the music industry with his soulful, feel-good music that has left a storied history in its wake. Alongside him, Carly Simon marks her first year to be nominated. The renowned singer is most well known as the first performer to win an Academy Award, Grammy and Golden Globe for a song composed and performed by a single artist. Her immeasurable influence on fellow artists, like Taylor Swift, has only proven her impact on the music industry. Finally, A Tribe Called Quest is getting their rightly deserved first nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. As pioneers of the jazz-rap revolution, they abandoned the aggressive side of the genre and instead created one of the most creative, eclectic and upbeat rap groups in music.
The voting will be done by more than 1,000 artists, historians and people in the music industry. Each nominee will be ranked on their influence on other artists, innovation, length of their career and superiority of their style. Fans are allowed to vote on their top five favorite artists and fans can submit their nominee selections until Apr. 29.
Once voting has finished, the inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will be announced in May with the ceremony taking place this fall.
