The triple Grammy winner and patron saint of all strong-willed women around the world came to the 2022 Met Gala not to play, but to slay all day in a jaw-dropping ensemble that can only be called a black and gold puff of beauty, comfort and refinement—and you know she played a golden flute on the red carpet, too.
The theme of the evening is "golden glamour" in honor of the Met's new exhibit "In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” and designer Thom Browne certainly understood the assignment. Lizzo’s look is made from black silk satin and gold bullion, but the coat steals the show. It took tailors 12,000 hours to hand-bead the floral design which captures the true essence of the gilded age.
“I feel like a piece of art,” she told Vogue during the official livestream, then she turned to her corkscrew nails. “Basically, I’ma be opening everybody’s wine tonight.”
“I wanted to take something that was a reference to a formal black tie event,” Browne says in a behind-the-scenes video. “It is one of the most beautiful things that I think I have done for someone … something worthy of someone as special as Lizzo.”
Speaking of Special, the singer-songwriter, actress and all-around entertainer’s next album is due for full release on July 15. Lead single "About Damn Time" sets the tone with a disco-inspired bassline and funky guitar work.
“It’s coming,” she says, “it’s gonna be the greatest labrum of all time. It’s the greatest album of my time, because I made it. Hope you like it, download it.”
