Do you hear that? It’s the internet exercising a modern J. Lo adage: Let’s get loud.
Just when things appeared to be winding down at the Venice International Film Festival, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck sent the world wide web into a frenzy by taking the premiere of The Last Duel to make their official red carpet debut as a couple. (Or should we say re-debut?)
In the Ridley Scott-directed film, Affleck stars alongside longtime industry partner Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, Harriet Walter, Marton Csokas and Nathaniel Parker. The Last Duel is based on the novel of the same name by Eric Jager with an adapted script from Affleck, Damon and Nicole Holofcener. The 14th-century tale of betrayal and vengeance tells the story of the last legally sanctioned duel in France. At the behest of Marguerite de Carrouges’ (Comer) claim that she was assaulted by her husband’s best friend, husband and knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) challenges friend and squire Jacques LeGris (Driver) to a duel at the request of King Charles VI (Alex Lawther).
Bennifer appeared on the red carpet in complementary ensembles. Affleck stuck to a traditional black-and-white tux—a classy, muted look leaving room for all eyes to flicker over to his glamorous partner. According to Instagram account Check the Tag, Lopez was styled by Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn in a white Georges Hobeika Fall-Winter 2021 Couture dress with an elongated crystal gemstone halter. She carried with her a glimmering Judith Leiber clutch and donned Cartier jewelry.
The singer had already been in Venice earlier in the week to participate in Dolce and Gabbana’s three-day celebration of the city’s artistic legacy and fashion show. The event unfurled around the reveal of its Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria, Alta Gioielleria and Alta Orologeria collections. Following her fashion show appearance, Lopez and Affleck were spotted heading to the film festival in a speedboat.
The Friday premiere marks the couple’s first official industry event together since rekindling their romance in the spring— nearly 20 years after their 2004 split. Their reunion was preceded by Lopez’s very public breakup with former fiancé and MLB star Alex Rodriguez and the end to Affleck’s relationship with actor Ana de Armas.
