Olivia Wilde will follow up comedy Booksmart with Don't Worry Darling.
Let the anticipation begin. Olivia Wilde’s next directorial effort will debut in approximately one year.
The actor-director released a whiplash-quick first look at Don’t Worry Darling, out Sept. 23, 2022. The psychological thriller focuses on a 1950s housewife who lives with her husband in a utopian experimental community. However, she comes to spiral with worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.
Florence Pugh and Harry Styles star as the lead couple with support from an A-list cast that includes Wilde herself and Gemma Chan, KiKi Lane, Nick Kroll and Chris Pine. Shia LaBeouf was originally set to act opposite Pugh, but, according to Variety, was fired by Wilde for poor behavior and a work style that clashed with the cast and crew.
The flickering new trailer begins with Pugh as a picture-perfect housewife sitting on a sun lounger. A plastered half smile, she dons a structured blue-and-white houndstooth tank and dangling diamond earrings, polishing off the cookie-cutter look with a teased half-updo hairstyle. In just about 10 seconds, everything descends into chaos. White noise rushes in as quick shots come in succession: a model of the community, Styles and Pugh feverishly making out, aerobic water dancers and Pugh frantically removing the saran wrap enclosed around her head.
Don’t Worry Darling stirred up buzz late last year when photos on-set in Palm Springs began circulating the internet, particularly of Styles and Pugh filming together for a scene in a driveway. It also gained attention after rumors swirled about Styles and Wilde dating.
A few months later, Wilde applauded Pugh with an Instagram post commeding her star’s work ethic. “To work with an actor as talented and brave as @florencepugh is any director’s dream,” she wrote in the caption. “I will forever be grateful for you, Flo. It was an honor to be your captain. Can’t wait for the world to see the astonishing work you’ve put into this movie. Tom Cruise run + Meryl skills = THE FLO.”
Based on a story by Katie Silberman and Carey and Shane Van Dyke, Don’t Worry Darling was adapted for the screen by Silberman. She also served as producer alongside Wilde, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon. It will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures.
