Spooky season is upon us, meaning it’s the perfect time to stream a horror movie. So pull up your laptop or turn on your TV, grab some popcorn and get ready for a good scare. All your favorite streaming platforms offer a stellar, year-round catalogue of horror movies of all subgenres. Looking for a bit of a laugh, too? Opt for Scary Movie on HBO Max or zombie comedy Juan of the Dead on Starz. If oldies are your thing, queue up 1958’s The Blob or Hitchcock must-sees The Birds and Psycho. Fans of more sinister stories can choose The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Children of the Corn or Rosemary’s Baby. You even have both versions of It right at your fingertips.
And don’t forget, horror movies are more than just a good scare. Take it from John Carpenter, the director of seminal slasher film Halloween (1978). In 2015, he explained to Interview Magazine the universality of horor: “Horror is a universal language; we're all afraid. We're born afraid, we're all afraid of things: death, disfigurement, loss of a loved one. Everything that I'm afraid of, you're afraid of and vice versa. So everybody feels fear and suspense. We were little kids once and so it's taking that basic human condition and emotion... and playing with it.”
