It’s an “Empire State of Mind” at the Met Gala red carpet—or perhaps an Empire state of train.
The incomparable, 15-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys stopped hearts and won the host honor of the city with her stunning Manhattan skyline gown. The black and silver dress drips with glittering beads courtesy of all-American designer Ralph Lauren.
Keys’ husband, world-renown producer Swizz Beatz, stood beside her in an equally-cool streetwear look that gives a nod to his hip-hop world; a culture that has taken much inspiration from the gilded age entrepreneurs of Manhattan, too.
The gown itself shimmers in black and silver beadwork in a structured fit that brings to mind the Empire State building itself, while the show-stopping train captures the iconic Manhattan skyline in beautiful detail.
“My inspiration is our city, New York City forever,” Keys told Vogue on the official livestream. “Just being able to have the empire state—we’re both from New York and Ralph Lauren is also from New York. We also wanted to bring New York to the gala.”
Keys was greeted by fans who immediately erupted into song, singing the hook from her iconic hit single “Empire State of Mind.” Her latest single “City of Gods” is also, in her words, “another New York anthem.”
The musical couple said they were most excited to celebrate the arts, support the Metropolitan Museum of Art and catch up with friends they haven’t seen in years.
